Brazil is one of the world's largest fertilizer importers, with minimal domestic production relative to demand. Soybeans, corn, sugarcane, cotton, and coffee are the dominant crops, all of which are heavily fertilized. DAP and MAP are key phosphate sources for soybean and corn. Potash (MOP) is the most imported fertilizer product by volume — Brazil's soils are potassium-deficient and sugarcane, soy, and coffee require large K applications. Urea is used for corn and sugarcane nitrogen. NPK blends are produced domestically from imported raw materials at blending plants.
Brazil is consistently one of the top-three global fertilizer importers. Its vast agricultural frontier — particularly the Cerrado biome expanding into MATOPIBA — requires enormous inputs. The country imports the majority of its potash, phosphate (DAP/MAP), and a substantial share of its nitrogen needs. Large trading companies and blending operations dominate the import market, but there is also a segment of smaller specialist traders. Seasonality is driven by the soybean and corn planting calendar (October–February).
