Ammonium Sulphate provides 21% nitrogen in the ammonium form (which has low volatilisation risk compared to urea) and 24% sulphur as sulphate — immediately plant-available. The ammonium-N form is also beneficial in alkaline soils where it acidifies the rhizosphere, improving nutrient uptake. This makes ammonium sulphate a preferred nitrogen source in calcareous and high-pH irrigated soils.

Sulphur deficiency is increasingly prevalent in agricultural soils globally as atmospheric sulphur deposition has declined with reduced industrial emissions. Ammonium sulphate addresses this deficiency in a single application alongside the nitrogen requirement. It is widely used for oilseeds (canola, mustard, sunflower), tea, tobacco, cereals, and high-value vegetables where S plays a critical role in oil synthesis, flavour compounds, and protein quality.
